Modern gaming technology offers great potential for providing low-cost training
systems for learning cognitive and procedural skills in relevant on-the-job
simulated situations.
The VESSEL suite of products, developed under an effort sponsored by the Office of Naval Research, are tools and training systems that harness this capability.
Our products include:
- VESSEL Damage Control Trainer: Provides individual training on damage control
skills within the 3D simulated interior of an Arleigh-Burke class destroyer.
- WINNER: Best Business Game in the 2009 Serious Games Showcase & Challenge, National Training Systems Association (NTSA) (Orlando, FL, Nov 30 - Dec 3) Official SGSC Website
- The U.S. Navy received a Training Magazine's 2010 Top 125 Award for Outstanding Initiative in Training
- The VESSEL project team won the National Training and Simulation Association (NTSA) 2010 Modeling and Simulation Award for Outstanding Achievement in Training (Team Award)

- VITAL: Visual Tool for Authoring Learning in games.:
An open-source, domain-independent, engine-agnostic visual authoring tool for non-programmers for creating and adapting the
instructional logic and content in a learning game with an emphasis on
supporting multi-disciplinary collaboration. The tool
allows editing of learning objectives, instructional strategy, narrative flow,
embedded assessment, branching logic, conditional instructional logic (e.g.,
guidance/feedback/etc) based on in-game actions, and more.
VITAL includes a platform-independent instructional engine that interfaces with the game engine to control the instructional experience in real-time based on instructional logic developed using the VITAL authoring tool.
- Available at http://sourceforge.net/projects/vital/. Includes source code, demonstration on 2 game engines and walkthrough tutorial exercise.
We have also developed a casual game that teaches how to identify Navy insignias. Play online
